Tad's Rants

Pride and Pocketbooks

We can’t pretend that this has been a fun season to watch, so far. The couple of highlight moments are overshadowed by poorer performances. Sunday was a repeat of the Niner’s inability to execute on the road or against a quality NFL quarterback. But the big question still looms, will the 49ers show significant (and sustained) improvement in the second half of the season. That is the big question, because improvement sustains faith.

I won’t bore you with declarative statements of the pathetic state of football in our fair city. And I’m certain you know who we blame hear at DUMPYORK.com for the woes of our beloved team. But what can we do about it?

Stop being a football fan? I don’t think so. Stop watching the 49ers? It might be the healthier alternative, but for many of us that isn’t really an option. Stop going to football games? That I can do. I can’t put any money I York’s pocket. This will be the first season in a very long time that I haven’t attended even one game.

Will not attending games cause York to sell the team? That is the big bluff. If the 49ers loose money, will York still hold on to them? It would be a massive blow to his pride to sell the team. Also, his wife has a fortune. But is a fortune enough? Can you loose money with an NFL franchise? Could be hard to do, but bills do have to be paid. I’m guessing York has two motivations when it comes to the Niners, pride and pocket book.

Don’t expect the media to jump on any boycott bandwagon. And at the moment I’m not suggesting one. The media makes their money from the fan’s passion for the game. No problem with that per says, I’m just stating the obvious. If the performance of the team continues to tank, I wouldn’t be surprised if the natural loss of the somewhat “Faithful” combined with the contrived loss of the hardcore “Faithful” to create a financial issue for the Yorkster. Failing, as a businessman, might be more than his pride can take. One can have faith, can’t one?

Postscript: I wonder, will the 49ers have children at the Xmas party this year?
