Tad's Rants

Post Pre-season Take

Time to just talk some football. I have a couple things to say as we close out preseason and I’ll refrain from York-bashing.

I think the Niner’s “Faithful” may have run into the unfortunate trap of “relative aspirations.” With all my heart I hope the Niners field a better team thanlast year, but relative to the rest of the division they may not be better. It is hard to tell by pre-season alone, but the rest of the division may be fielding better teams too.

It is the first time this century (and most of the last) that the Arizona Cardinals are getting props for what appears to be a pretty potent roster and reports of having an outstanding training camp. These reports come from credible sources. Ya hear that sound? It’s Dennis Green’s system is starting to come together.

The Rams just clobbered the Lions. I know it is just the Lions, but I was impressed with the crispness of the passing game and the performance of S. Jackson. The Rams did what good teams do against bad teams, they continued to play their game to their expectations and rolled up the score. And as I remember, the Lions won more games than we did last year. Hmmm.

Even if Seattle doesn’t improve this year, I doubt they’ll get worse. Status quo features S. Alexander and a pretty good supporting cast on both sides of the ball. I’d consider their chances of getting better even to their chances of getting worse.

So the team we beat twice in overtime is getting raves from serious sources. The California-refugee Rams are showing good stuff and the Seahawks appear solid. It may be the Niners field a much-improved team this year and still go 2-14.

Nightmare!!!

At this point, I’m hopping for being 1-4 before the bye; picking up 3 more wins the rest of the schedule, and showing significant improvement the second half of the season. Those are low expectations, but beingm realistic doesn’t mean I’m being pessimistic. Face it, the Niners are essentially an expansion team, without the extra draft picks.

York is still a tosser. (couldn’t help myself)
