How do you feel
about York?
It is a hot topic on the bulletin board, but I propose that how we feel
at this point isn't important. It's how we are going to feel after the
first game, at mid-season, and as the Niners approach the playoffs that
will tell the tale.
Right now we are just dangling in the dark. Who knows if the team will
get more from its potential with Nolan or if Jonas was the right guy?
Or if they are getting enough from free agency or still playing Money
Ball. I respect everyone's opinion and I find it
interesting reading, but only time will tell.
What do we know, and what don't we know? Right now we know York trashed
a magnificent franchise in a relatively short period of time. Can he do
anything now to substantially rebuild confidence? My take is he can
follow Diggity's advice (check out the bulletin board: DumpYork.com
Forum Index -> Dr. John York) and make a decent start, but creating
a winning organization takes LEADERSHIP and confidence is built with
results.
I'm skeptical about whether York possess the leadership skills to
recreate what we have lost. I suspect York is egotistical, pompous,
cheap, and carries a chip on his shoulder the size of the Youngstown,
Ohio Wal-Mart, but I'm just guessing. And as unpleasant as those traits
may be, I don't consider them the true measure of a person. It just
means I doubt he is the kind of guy I would invite to a BBQ.
With what do we know about Nolan, the front office, and the team? I'm
hopeful that Nolan can one day be a solid NFL coach, but it is WAY too
early to hope for more than that. I'm really concerned about the front
office. A first class front office is critically important to the
longer-term success of the team. Will the Niners latticework of vice
presidents provide clear accountability? Can York really sit back and
step away, and does it matter anyway if his 23-year-old son is
reporting back to daddy? Nolan is the big cat right now, but he is a
rookie coach and shouldn't be expected to suffer all the blame should
this team drag us through anything close to pain and suffering of last
year's debacle.
The team? We know they showed heart. Even during the drubbing they took
from the Redskins late in the season when all was lost, they still gave
it up on the field. I've watched really good teams just mail it in when
the game got away from them--Denver specifically--and I didn't see that
from the Niners last year. They may have felt it, but I didn't see it
on the field. Yet, is heart alone going to be enough?
What are we to expect--success or progress? San Francisco or Mexico?
Aaron or Alex? I don't know, but how we feel about York right now isn't
as important as how we are going to feel about him when they start the
regular season.
