Tad's Rants

Send in the Marketing Wizards!

What do ya know? According to the
San Francisco Business Times, the 49er front office is conducting a survey to find out why attendance is off. No, really.

When satire becomes reality, you know things are getting ugly. Last week's rant spoofed just this kind of stupidity. You can hear York now, "Release the marketing wizards." They are sending an email out to season ticket holders asking why they aren't attending games, as well as surveying fans at the next two games. When Dr. York gets the answer, what do you think he'll do? TBD.

A survey? Are you kidding me?

But wait--it gets worse. David Peart, 49er vice president of sales and marketing, says the team is kicking up marketing efforts to retain season ticket holders. "We don't want to rely exclusively on what happens on the field [to attract people to games," said Peart.

(My fingers quiver with rage as they hover over the keyboard.)

He is pretty much admitting that they don't intend to rely on good football to be the backbone of this franchise.

The illusion that 49er fans will enjoy watching this team if only you give them a free key chain, bumper sticker, or autographed Nerf football, is just the kind of marketing baloney that will make the fan base sick to their stomach. He already has pretty much said we'll enjoy watching a sub-standard team as long as we watch from nicer seats (from a new stadium).

The failure of our team is a reflection of the failure of our ownership. Many people are blaming Terry Donohue. I prefer to ask what Terry Donohue did to deserve a four-year contract. Because it is on that basis that Ker-York-ian has doomed this team. York is the source of our pain.
