Where We Stand

Here it is, Week 17 and the final game for my beloved San Francisco 49ers this season.  Where has the season gone?  How can it be over?  What really happened?

The season started with the promise of a division championship by our Coach Nolannew Head Coach Mike Nolan.  Nobody could honestly believe the 49ers would win the NFC West Division, but it was nice to hear a standard being set.  Under the former head coach Erickson, the only standard was that the team might get dressed for the game.  So I was happy to hear Nolan talk about winning.

Personally, I was hoping for a six win season.  I was hoping to see improvement along the offensive line.  I expected the defense to keep us in games.  But what I wanted most was to see a return to a high level of play, let’s call it the “Gold Standard,” from this organization, both on the field and off.

The shocking news of Thomas Herrion, who took his last breath doing what he loved most in the world, death started the season on a down note.  I, as well as the entire Forty Niner Fan base shared their grief with his family.

The season kick-off was a high note, an unexpected win against St. Louis (28-25), followed by an embarrassing lose (3-42) to Philadelphia.  Which team was the real 49ers?  How did we looks so prepared in one game, then completely out-coached in the next?  Many questions swirled going into the third game against Dallas.

Now I could recap the entire season, but that would be a complete waste of bandwidth and besides, we all know what happened.  Lowlights include the game in Mexico, Jaime Winborn fiasco, poor showing in Washington, Kwame’s endless penalties, Brandon “T-Rex: Lloyd excuses, and the lack of progress by Alex Smith.

GoreSo what were the highlights?

By my count, the 49ers have been competitive in 6 of the 15 games so far this season (Week 1, 2, 8, 11, 15, 16), posting 3 wins.  I have enjoyed team MVP Nedney, on-side kicks, Bryant Young, Cody “I will play any position” Pickett and the emergence of Frank Gore.

As the 49ers go into the game against the Texans this Sunday, I expect a victory.  I expect to see a fired-up team.  I expect to see a strong running game.  I expect a touchdown pass from Alex Smith.

Happy New Year all – Faith in the 49ers – Faithless in York

JonSide Note:

As usual, I watched last week's victory againts the Rams in the Dump York Bunker.  Dave, Jen, and Hunter were there, plus we had a special visit from the Dump York's New York Chapter president Jon.  He was in fine form, living the High Life!  Check out his photo>>>>>>
