Rude Dude

Timmy!

Back from my Turkish hell and I need to find out what is new in Niner land, so I called my good buddy Jed.  Jed answers the phone sounding like he has tied on another one.  Jeez, I thought I had a drinking issue.  I hope his “Ford Escort” issues are o.k. – wink – wink.

Jed is a bit fuzzy, but he informs me that the Forty Niners have traded Timmy!  Rude DudeThat is Tim Rattay for those of you who don't speak South Park or attended any San Francisco games lately.  Now that Timmy is gone; in a deal that sent the former starting quarterback to the Buccaneers for a reported sixth-round draft choice in 2006, what is happening with our quarterbacks?

Well, first it means that Coach Nolan is serious about sticking with Alex Smith, for the good and the bad.  This is all good because the Niners are not going any to the playoffs this season.  I know this will come to a shock to some of out faithful readers.

So Alex is going to be earning his money and seeing a lot of time on his back.  After the preseason, I was a little worried about our bonus baby.  But after the Colts game, I felt that he was making some better throws.  Smith's struggles were predictable in his first career start. The former Utah star never got comfortable, going 9-of-23 for 74 yards and committing five turnovers while getting sacked five times.  Yeah, I know he threw five interceptions, but his arm did look stronger than Timmy!

As Peyton Manning said after the game, "Everyone wants to win their first game, and everyone wants it to be just like college, but it's not," Manning said. "It is the NFL for a reason. It's a big adjustment. It's tough going against an excellent defense in your first start. ... Six games or a year from now, you look back on these games and you say, 'I hated to go through it, but it helped me become a better player.'"

All I am hoping is that at the end of the season is that 1) Alex has survived, 2) that his touchdown to interception ratio is about equal and that 3) he begins to take command of this team.  I am looking forward to the final game against Houston to see how much he has progressed, though my feeling may be mixed since the Forty Niners will be playing the woeful Texans in what might be dubbed the Reggie Bush Bowl. If USC's star junior tailback enters the 2006 NFL Draft, the team that finishes with the worst record might land him with the first pick.
