More Vice Presidents
The 49ers have
named Scot
McCloughan as Vice President / Player Personnel. This
is an interesting hire because it
indicates that the Forty Niners have decided that they do not need a
General
Manager, just more Vice Presidents. I
think we now have six vice presidents running the team.
Now let me
remember, just
one month ago we had a General Manager. Remember Terry Donahue? The Forty Niner organization was firmly under
his control. He is credited (blamed)
with the current Cap Hell 2 odyssey of this past year.
John York indicated that he firmly believes in
Donahue’s plan
at his January press conference announcing the firing of Donahue.
After Donahue was
fired, we
learned that Donahue was feeding the press with back stabbing comments
about then
Head Coach Dennis Erickson. We learned
that NFL executives thought the Donahue was a joke.
We know that he was York best friend in the Forty Niner
Organization. Hell, Dr. York gave Donahue a four year extension just
this past September.
So what does John York do now? He
acts liked a spurned lover and decides he doesn’t need another General
Manager. So he hires McCloughan and
gives him the title of Vice President / Player Personnel.
Vice President titles for everyone.
This will be
McCloughan's
first go at assessing pro players -- he previously has scouted college
talent.
Thirty-two of the 35 players he drafted with the Seahawks are still
with the team.
So good luck Scot and welcome to the Forty Niners, home of the Vice
Presidents
club.
The scope of
McCloughan's
role is not yet known. Yet the Forty Niners have been clear about one
thing, he
will be reporting to Nolan and York. But
what is interesting to me, is that John York remains in the position of controlling
day to day
operations. It also indicates that John York has once again proven that he has no
plan, no clue
and continues to make shortsighted decisions.
One month we have an organization run by a
General Manager, now we have
one run by a Head Coach.
If this team is
ever going
to become a championship contender again in the next few years -- and,
frankly,
that is a legitimate question -- it needs to make a plan and stick with
it. So what will we have next year? I’m betting on more Vice Presidents.
