Jen's Soap Box

Some Bright Spots, But….

Welcome to another 49ers football season. As all of you who watched our opener yesterday know, there is good news, and then there’s the same old same-old.

Good news first. Frank Gore ran for 87 yards, and looked very strong and capable throughout the game. One thing’s for surehe’s no Kevan Barlow. And thank God for that. It was really refreshing to watch a capable Niners’ runner carry the ball, time and again, without having to hold my breath or dive behind one of Rude Dude’s nasty Bunker sofas until the carnage was over.

Alex Smith actually had a good game. He still looks a bit tentative at
times, but did a solid job, and his 23-40, 288 yard numbers bear that out. Now, if he just had some receivers on the other end of the ball…wait, I’m jumping ahead to same-old.

Bunker denizens agreed that the secondary looks capable of doing a good job, but without any pass rush, it’s difficult for them to really shine. Warner had all day to throw back there, especially in the first half. We can’t win without getting to quarterbacks.

Bryant Young. What a warrior he is, and a great representative of
old-school Niner philosophy for the younger players. Some of them have no idea how lucky they are to have him as a teammate, but they eventually will.

Same old same-old. Well, look at the Card’s new stadium. How great would that be? And you can point to holes in almost every section of the team. Need pass rusher, need receivers, etc. These problems will require money to fixsomething that Dr. Dork is never willing to part with. We’ll see how the season goes, but I can’t imagine our old dog of an owner will learn any new tricks.

Hang in there, faithful.
