It's all about the
road!
I sometimes think back to the good old days of
greatness and ponder some of the things that made this the premiere
franchise in the NFL. One of those memories is how great the Niners
played on the road. We might go 6-2 at home, but on the road it was 8-0
what seemed like every year. The Niners took great pride in going into
other towns and kicking the butts of the home team. My how long ago
that feels.
Flash forward to 2005 and look at our road record. 0-3 does not begin
to tell the story. At Philly, 42-3. At Mexico, two defensive TDs kept a
31-14 loss to Arizona from being an even bigger laugher than it already
was. And then 52-17 at Washington to a team that was blown out and shut
out by the Giants the following week. In short, our road efforts have
been pathetic!
This is where we need a quality owner to step up! Sure the coaching is
obviously not getting this team prepared to play on the road. Whatever
they have done, they need to scrap it and start from scratch. But York
can step up and help out. Back in the day, Eddie D had his own plane.
Two seats for every player. A hotel room for each player. Top notch
food, top notch comforts, first class everything for his family he
called the 49ers. With that type of treatment and Bill Walsh as coach,
no team has ever done better on the road.
Of course this is a pipe dream now. I am sure York has the current
Niners staying at the local Motel 6. He probably has the rollaway cots
brought in so he can sleep 4 per room. Dinner the night before the game
is probably at the Home Town buffet. Nothing like a good case of
heartburn and diarrhea to get ready for the game. Got to save
those pennies.
Class is measured in a number of ways. York needs to step up and do his
part to get these players what they need. If it means spending a few
extra dollars for some simple comforts, so do it. It is clear so far
this team has no clue on the road. The coaches have failed, the players
have failed and that means the owners have failed. How about York
dressing up as a door man in Chicago? York, step up and do something to
help this struggling franchise! Learn from the past, that how you treat
the players actually can effect the outcome of the games!
Alas, York is more worried about the Xmas lights on sale at Wal-Mart.
Pass the liver and onions please.
