Dave's Rants

How do we measure success?

We could win some games, we could lose all our games. Either way, I am just so so happy that the football season is here. But as we kick things off this weekend, I wonder what is a successful season for our beloved Niners? In Ninerland we used to judge success by Super Bowls. Now, we have Dumpyork.com. So do we need to make the playoffs to be successful? Hit .500? Win 6 games? Win 1? Be competitive? Show improvement? What will be an acceptable season for the Niners?

I think if you look at the long term goal of winning Super Bowls you have to think about three years. (Let me for a moment forget about our ownership and the extreme unlikeliness of winning anything with the Yorkster around) This year is rebuilding. Rattay will start, Smith will play when Rattay gets injured. Next year will be Smith's first full year. Maybe in that third year, with a surrounding cast he will be ready to lead us on a charge. With that in mind, the fewer games we win this season, the higher the draft picks, the more talent to surround Smith with.

Now before everyone jumps down my throat, I am NOT routing against the Niners. Just pointing out that there could be some benefit to another bad year. Now none of us can handle another two win season. But maybe six wins, while showing improvement and competing in every game? The reality is, the Niners are not a good football team. The playoffs are a miracle. 500 is possible if all goes well and some of the players are better than we think. With a very questionable OL, I don't see our offense improving that much. Our D if healthy should keep us in the games and win a few games for us.

So maybe this year is again about discovering what players we have and what fakers we have. The year is about developing a coaching staff. The year is about improving the organizations ability to evaluate talent. And in the end, the year is a preseason of sort for future successes.

Nothing would make me happier than a playoff run, but I just don't see the talent. I hope I am wrong. So in lieu of that, let's show some improvement, let's show some fundamentals and let's start the return to excellence. But win, lose or draw, I AM READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!!!!

And now that I am out of my dreamland, I can remember that too much success will lead to Dork doing something stupid and having us start all over again. Please Dr, please sell the team! Spare us all!
