THIS IS SO WRONG!!
The good news is
still that Terry Donahue and Dennis Erickson are no longer Niners. The
bad news is John York is still running the team and seems on another
endless quest to make a bad decision to further deteriorate our once
proud franchise. This coahcing search is just all wrong!
First, as we enter
our second week without a coach or GM it is clear once again that the
Yorks have NO PLAN and NO CLUE. They say that a 2-14 season is
unacceptable. Why? Because they upset us fans? But we all saw the 2-14
season coming right at us starting about October. So why did it take
York so long to make up his mind to fire his staff? And more
importantly, why is it taking so long to put a replacement plan
together?
After having a
backstabbing GM like Donahue, York has decided to make this a coach-run
franchise. Well, you could make that argument if you had a very strong
organization in place, to go with a very organized, disciplined,
structured, and hard working coach. But the Niners organization is in
complete flux. So whoever comes in to take over coaching will have to
help build the organization from the ground up. There is evidence that
this just does not work. The great Mike Holmgren gave up the Packers to
run the show in Seattle. He had his GM duties taken away two years ago.
York has sought advice from Packers President Bob Harlan. Well, the
Packers have not taken the GM duties away from Mike Sherman. Mike
Shanahan has full control in Denver and what does that get them?
So now York has
this backwards plan to build from the coach up, yet look at the
candidates he is interviewing. Lewis, Heimdinger (however he spells it,
it sounds dirty to me) and Nolan to name a few. All legit coaching
candidates I'm sure, and in the right situation they might do well. But
these guys have no experience in running a football team, let alone an
entire franchise. Only Romeo Crennel presents some optimism as he has
learned from the successes of Bill Belichick. But even he is working
within the system and not leading it.
Even York seems to
know this is a disaster waiting to happen. Does he fly all these fine
people out to Santa Clara to see the best of the west, the beautiful
Bay Area, the practice facilities, meet some of the players. NOPE! He
is holed up in St. Louis of all places!
I thought I could
be patient because York showed some balls in firing Erickson and
Donahue. But the longer this goes on, the more it reminds me of our
search two years ago. The one that netted us Erickson to begin with.
For all the good that happened in Ninerland last week, I am starting to
wonder if we have truly reached rock bottom yet.
If only York would
just sell the team!
