Dave's Rants

The Good, The Bad and The York

Well  we finally got the news that we have all been waiting for, and I know for some including myself it was quite a surprise. Dennis Erickson was fired, Terry Donahue stepped down, and John York flipped the bill.

The Good: Erickson and Donahue are gone! I really can not blame Erickson too much. He was dealt a lousy hand. But no matter how bad we were, I never saw any improvement from the Niners. That is on coaching. And don't get me started on Donahue. Not sure I can name one good thing he touched. The fact is the Niners should be better off without them both.

The Bad: John York did not come out with a statement saying "I am ready to sell the team!" That may have been too  much for my poor heart to take, but that is what I was hoping for. In reality though, the bad is we now enter the off season without a coach or GM. So who will evaluate the draft? Free agents? Will anyone work for York? Is it possible we could get two guys worse than what we just got rid of?

The York: I really wanted him to impress me with this press conference. Show me some leadership. Show us that he has a plan. Show me he understands his mistakes and is ready to take us to the promised land. That is not what I saw. NOT EVEN CLOSE! I saw a captain of a sinking ship, clueless how to plug the leak and save his crew. His plan is to hire a football coach first, then a general manager. That only works if you give the coach the power over the roster and turn the GM into a contract man. He did not say who would be conducting the job search, only that a lot of people would have input. He says he has 5 Vice-Presidents reporting to him, but it is unclear that any of them even know the game of football. He says he, his wife, and his son Jed are all big football fans but showed know insight that any of them can be big football owners. He fired Terry Donahue as GM but then said his salary cap plan is still in place. Why fire the man if you are still going to follow is dying plan?

It has never been clearer that York is in way over his head. As the league races by him he is reacting to the public criticism. But in reacting he seems to have no answers on how to improve. He says he wants to win, but where is the evidence of how to win. Maybe in just a few days he will shock the world and hire some real football guys to coach and manage his team. That would be great. But I fear this "committee" he will put together to guide him through interviews will create a process that could take a long time, putting us even further behind everyone else. And while he pays Erickson and Donahue a combined $10-million to do nothing, how much money will he give the next crew? Therefore will anyone want to come work for this man?

I still see the future of the Niners in dire straights. Our mission remains strong. Two are down but the important one is still to go. Dr. York, Denise, Jed, do the right thing, PLEASE, PLEASE SELL THE TEAM!!!!!
