DumpYorkers at Candlestick
All I can say is
it was a great day, until the game started. Yes, as we stated the DumpYork.com co-founders
attended the 49er/Redskin game on Saturday. What a fun time we had. To sum
it all up I guess I would say I was just shocked by the amount of support we
really have.
We arrived early
at 9am. Our DumpYork shirts on, our mission clear to all and a lot of questions about what may
happen during the day. It started well as we unpacked and prepared for the
tailgate. Two San Francisco police officers pulled up and as I went to talk
with them, some concern in the back of my mind, their first words were "nice
shirts!" It was easy street from there on in.
At 11am our
faithful arrived. We spent the next hour chanting as the players, coaches, even Dr. York himself
drove into the stadium. The players laughed, the coaches cringed, and we can
only guess what York's reaction really
was. Our protest was peaceful, but loud. 60 strong with chants of "Dump York!" "Sell the Team!" And my
personal favorite when an unknown 49er executive walked by "Your boss sucks!"
which even brought a smile to his face.
After that we
retired to our tailgate party. We had people constantly coming up to us asking us for shirts,
asking about the website, and most importantly asking about our movement.
While many want to add Dump Donahue too our wish list, most understood and
agree with our mission statement that "Greatness starts at the top."
Once inside the
stadium for the game, again all positive reviews. Many questions, many supporters, many laughs
but mostly it was all about Dump York. At the two minute warning of first half we started
a "Sell the team" chant. It
was far from 40,000 people strong but I am quite sure they could hear us in the owners box.
Near the end of
the game we took out the Dump York banner that we snuck into the game. Even a couple of
players looked at it and laughed. There were two people in front of us with
dump york bags on their heads. As the game ended and the stands cleared we
walked the banner around the stadium,
again to applause and good cheer.
In summary I was
just amazed by the positive feedback we got at the game. I have said before that when we
started this website we knew we were not alone in our thinking. But as the
number of visitors to the website have increased we occasionally sit back in awe
at what we have started. Saturday was no different. Of all the people I met
and talked to on Saturday the closest
I could get to disagreement was an attitude of who cares about York, get rid of Donahue. But even those people
recognized the weaknesses of York. I talked with a grandmother who has
missed two home games since 1972. I talked to several other gentlemen who
date back to Keezar. The passion for the 49ers still lives strong. And
everybody now lives in a state of frustration.
Ninerland is a
tough place to be these days. But Saturday's visit to the game has done nothing but strengthen
our resolve. We will be around until the greatness is returned to the
49er organization. And for that to happen, JOHN YORK MUST SELL THE TEAM!!!!
