The next Bidwell!
Yikes, first I have to say I am jealous of Jerry Jones and Al Davis.
Then I compare the Niners to the Warriors. And now the ultimate sin, it
is time to compare our once proud franchise to the mighty St.
Louis/Arizona Cardinals. Yes, John York is the next Bill Bidwell!
I am quite sure Bidwell has done many great things over the years for
the Cardinal organization. Of course the only one that sticks out is he
was nice enough to leave St. Louis so that mid-American city could have
room for a Super Bowl champion when the Rams came to town.
Beyond that, Bidwell has pretty much done nothing for the fans -- or
the sport for that matter. We are talking about a team thats one claim
to fame was upsetting the Cowboys in the Playoffs a few years back. Oh
yeah, and that is their ONLY playoff win since the Truman
administration! In three cities -- Chicago, St. Louis and Arizona --
the team has only made the playoffs 6 times! Other than that, Bidwell
has been cheap. He refuses to pay for top flight coaches, he does not
bring in any decent free agents and worse, he wont re-sign any of his
home grown stars. Heck, the Cardinals have lived the better part of
their existence with top ten draft picks. They bring them in, turn some
into outstanding players, then ship them off to the highest free agent
bidder?!? The Cardinals as a franchise have been the laughing
stock of the NFL.
Then along comes John York and our mighty 49ers. Here we live in "Cap
Hell." No money to keep our stars, no money to bring in new players, or
sign top of the line coaches. An old stadium that is impossible
to make money with. Boo hoo, wahhh!!!!!!! Does any of this sound
familiar? It is exactly this attitude that will keep the 49ers from
ever being successful with the Yorks running the show. Sure, in 10
years maybe the planets will align and we will make a playoff push for
a year. But this is the franchise that has spoiled us with Super Bowl
or bust! Now do we have to live with the 6 wins or bust mentality? Oh,
it could be painful.
Of course there is a bright side. The Cardinals have finally put some
money into the organization. Dennis Green is there, a new stadium is
coming. All of a sudden Arizona is an up-and-coming team. And of course
it all happened when Bidwell turned over the operations to his son.
Rumor has it the Yorks would like their kids to run the 49ers some day.
Do we have to wait that long for a winner? I figure the kids can't be
worse than what we have now!
