Bad Decisions
I think the one thing we all agree on now is that the 49ers are a bad
team. I really don't have a problem with that. My problem is WHY the
49ers are a bad team. I have already discussed the "Cap Hell" and
whatever that means. Now it is time to discuss why Dr. York decided to
give a contract extension to our GM Terry Donahue? Does that make any
sense to anyone?
Donahue seems like a nice guy. He had a nice career at UCLA. He was
hand picked for this job by Bill Walsh. It seemed like he had a plan
for what to do with the Niners. But under his leadership as GM he has
watched the 49ers go from playoffs to what we have now. He had one of
the strangest coaching changes in the firing of Mooch and the hiring of
his replacement Erickson. His draft choices have not panned out for the
most part. His contract decisions have been questionable. (For example
he could have resigned CBs Ahmed Plummer and Jason Webster the year
before they were free agents for less money. Instead they waited until
both contracts expired, Webster went elsewhere and they overpaid for
Plummer, a nice player but far from a superstar.) The list goes on.
But rather than changing at the top, the Yorks reward Donahue with a
4-year contract extension. They do this in the middle of a season that
everybody felt was doomed even before our 1-8 record. So York does not
want to retain a coach that got us to the playoffs, but will reward a
GM that really has not had anything work out for the team?
This is why we need change at the top. We need an owner that is willing
to make decisions designed to win championships. Donahue got a chance,
it did not work out. The owner needs to step up and admit he made a
mistake, and should try something new. But with this tandem at the top
I just don't see a bright future for the 49ers. It is frustrating. And
that is why I am here at dumpyork.com. We want better. It has nothing
to do with this year. It may not have anything to do with next year. I
want the belief that we will have a brighter future. I don't want the
49ers to be compared to the Warriors. Does York/Donahue remind anyone
else of Cohan/St. Jean?
